According to a NYC Mentoring Program (NYCMP) Evaluation, conducted by the Division of Teaching and Learning at the NYC Department of Education’s Research Policy Support Group (RPSG), NYC Public HS students who were NYCMP participants in 2014-15 were 10th, 11th and 12th graders and 67.9% where females and mostly Latino. When compared to those that were not in the NYCMP the following outcomes were evident: 1) Attendance rates of students involved with the NYCMP was significantly higher than those who were not. 2)SAT Scores: substantive differences - NYCMP mentees outperforming more in reading and writing. 3) Regents-NYCMP students did better in History and writing, but scored lower in Math and science.
A) 88 young women successfully completed a positive three-year mentoring relationship with an adult mentor.
B) 84 mentees graduated and attended colleges/universities as follows:
30% of mentees that graduated attended private institutions such as Manhattanville, Fordham, Marymont, Hartwick, St. Francis College, and Brandeis.
23% attended the State University of New York at campuses located in New Paltz, Buffalo, Oswego, Utica, Plattsburgh and Binghamton.
40% attended the City University Schools at Hunter, Brooklyn, Queens and City College.
7% attended Community College such as La Guardia, Kingsborough and the Borough of Manhattan.
C) Former mentees were awarded $193,100 in private scholarships.
D) Our mentees reported the mentoring program was helpful in the following ways:
· Strong Mentee/Mentor Relationships
· College Campus Tours
· Exposure to New Cultural Activities
· Developing Strong Peer Relationships
· Scholarship Research
· Preparation for the College Application Process
